When was IRN-BRU invented?
On a brisk Falkirk Monday, on the 15th April 1901, the Barr Brothers changed the landscape of Scottish history when they released IRON BREW.
What was IRN-BRU originally called?
Originally called IRON BREW, the name change came as a result of government regulation, which said a product’s name had to be “literally true”.
Although the drink did contain iron, it wasn’t brewed. This led to the brand name with the phonetic respelling of IRN-BRU.
Proper spelling is for nerds anyway.
What does IRN-BRU taste like?
A debate that rages through the streets of Scotland on any given day, some say bubblegum, some tutti-frutti, we’ve even heard ginger unicorns or haggis soda thrown into the mix.
Even the most experienced palettes are unable to decipher its complex profile.

IRN-BRU essence is BRU’d to a secret recipe in a factory in Cumbernauld, Scotland.

In case of an emergency the recipe is kept in a secure location somewhere in Scotland.
What is the secret recipe for IRN-BRU?
The recipe for IRN-BRU is one of the world's most closely guarded secrets. It wouldn’t be a secret if we told you! Today only three people in the world know the secret recipe of IRN-BRU, former Chairman Robin Barr, his daughter Julie Barr and one other AG Barr Director whose name remains confidential.
Is IRN-BRU a hangover cure?
Many people feel that IRN-BRU is a great pick-me-up generally and there are those that believe it can help with a hangover. People with a hangover tend to be dehydrated so it could be that - or it could be a bit of magic in the secret recipe that no-one can explain.

Is there caffeine in IRN-BRU?
Yes. IRN-BRU contains caffeine but in small quantities, where it is added to enhance flavour. There are only 30mg of caffeine in a 330ml can of IRN-BRU. A mug of tea contains more than twice that, at about 75mg of caffeine, and a mug of coffee provides about 100mg of caffeine - so levels of caffeine in IRN-BRU are relatively low in comparison to other drinks. IRN-BRU Sugar Free and XTRA contain the same amount of caffeine as regular IRN-BRU.

Is there iron in IRN-BRU?
Yes there is. Although the recipe for IRN-BRU is one of the world's most closely guarded secrets, we can confirm that IRN-BRU does and always has contained a very small amount of iron.
